Famous for its skiing Routt County is home to Steamboat Springs. Ski Town USA as its known by. Steamboat Springs has produced more Olympians than any other ski resort in the nation. One of its many claims to fame. Routt County is also home to Routt National Forest and the Zirkle Wilderness area. The headwaters of the mighty Yampa river are located here. The Yampa is the longest stretch of untamed water in the country. Elevations here range from 6,000 feet to over 12,000 feet in the flat tops wilderness area. Many streams, rivers and lakes dot the mountainous landscape here and offer exceptional opportunities for the avid sportsmen. Once home to John Wayne, the mystique that drew him here still remains. The wild west still lives here in Routt County.
